On her route by barge to the Tower of London she likely have passed under the impaled heads of her reported lovers, Culpeper and Dereham, on London Bridge. She married Henry in July , just four months after Catherine Howard was beheaded, and went on to outlive him — though only by a year.
Catherine Parr had been married twice before, being titled Lady Burgh and then Lady Latimer, and married again around six months after Henry died, making her the most married English queen. But she considered it her duty to marry the King instead. In , Catherine, who held strong Protestant sympathies, faced a plot to get rid of her by anti-Protestant officials.
These officials tried to turn Henry against Catherine and even drew up a warrant for her arrest. But Catherine outwitted them and successfully reconciled with her husband, avoiding the same fate as her unlucky predecessors. She also differed from her predecessors being 30 years old, and a scholar. She became the first English queen to write and publish a book under her own name in , with Prayers and Meditations.

Jane Seymour Anne of Cleves. This was a political match, an alliance between two non-Catholic countries. A portrait of Anne was painted by Hans Holbein, probably the most famous of the Tudor court painters, and Henry agreed to the match. Both parties were happy for the marriage to be annulled after just 6 months and Anne was granted a generous income and several homes including Hever Castle.
Anne remained in England and was a frequent visitor to Court as an honoured guest. Cromwell however was not forgiven for arranging the disastrous match and was executed on a trumpted-up charge of treason.
Henry was now no longer the athletic sportsman he once was. A disastrous accident at the age of 44, when his horse rolled on him in a tournament, had left him with a crippled leg.
Unable to exercise, Henry nevertheless continued with his lavish lifestyle, gaining so much weight that by the end of his life he measured 4. Overweight and plagued by leg ulcers, Henry still yearned for a second male heir to secure the succession. Despite rumours of love affairs before she came to Court, Henry married Catherine in Independent and well-educated, Catherine Parr was Henry's last and sixth wife; the pair were married in Maud named her daughter after the queen; thus Henry's last wife was named after his first.
Parr was a twice-made widow. The most well-documented incident of Catherine Parr's life was her effort to ban books, a truly horrible act under her husband's leadership that practically got her arrested. When Henry came to admonish her for her brash actions, she submitted to him, saying she was merely looking to create a circumstance when he could teach her the proper way to behave. Henry accepted the sentiment, either true or devised, saving her from a brutal end. Following the death of her half-brother Edward in , Mary became the queen of England and ruled until her death in Although Elizabeth was born a princess, Henry eventually declared her illegitimate.
As a middle-aged man, Henry became covered with pus-filled boils and possibly suffered from gout. A jousting accident opened a violent wound in his leg which ulcerated and left him unable to play sports. His eventual obesity required that he be moved with mechanical inventions. His habit of binge-eating highly fatty meats was perhaps a symptom of stress.
A recent and credible theory suggests that he suffered from untreated type II diabetes. Henry's only surviving son, Edward, inherited the throne, becoming Edward VI. Princesses Elizabeth and Mary waited in succession. We strive for accuracy and fairness.

Henry was entranced; Catherine made him feel young again, helping him forget the constant pain of his ulcerated legs. How Catherine felt about being married to a man old enough to be her grandfather is unknown, but she is said to have accepted her lot with good grace, anxious to please her ambitious family. Catherine loved the luxury of court and her besotted husband showered her with expensive gifts. The lonely monarch needed a companion and, in , as plague broke out in London, Henry married twice-widowed Katherine Parr at Hampton Court Palace.
Aged 31, Katherine was slim and attractive — far from the matronly figure she is often portrayed as — with a deep love of learning and desire for religious reform.
