These waters bring back Isolde in a painful, horrified, tormented and distorted undead state. In her pain and confusion, Isolde stabs Viego with his own ancient sword through his heart, and the magic of the waters clash with the ancient sword. This causes a massive explosion of corruption that traps everything it touches into a frozen state of undead, creating the now cursed Shadow Isles.
After that, it is unknown what really happens to Isolde. Viego is resurrected on the Shadow Isles thousands of years later, coincidentally after Lucien saves Senna's soul from Thresh's lantern. It turns out that Thresh may have been harboring Senna's soul because of her "curse. After she was corrupted by the small bit of magic but not killed, the undead constantly hunted Senna. It is later revealed that this "curse" is actually Isolde's soul, hiding inside Senna's body. As Viego extracts Isolde's soul from Senna's body, a peculiar wail can be heard.
It sounds like either the wail of a child, which would reveal something disturbing about her marriage to Viego, or a terrifying wail of pain and torment. Interestingly enough, it does not seem like Senna is Viego's only target for Isolde; Yorick also appears to be on his list.
This is proven by both of Viego's in-game voice interactions. When he sees Senna and Yorick, he calls out to Isolde to come back to him.
This reveals that Isolde is definitely in multiple pieces - the soul that hides in Senna and something that is attached to Yorick. A tormented entity that Yorick believes to be born from The Ruination and also acts as his ultimate ability in-game. This definitely reflects Isolde's theme as a seamstress and Viego's quest to revive her.
One thing is for certain, Isolde's story will fill in the gaps in Runeterra's ancient history and questions about other champions. In the ensuing destruction, Isolde's spirit was splintered into several pieces, each one a distinct part of her personality.
One such fragment, filled with her pain, manifested in the form of a ghoulish Mist figure. This combination of lost souls, known as the Maiden of the Mist, attached to a monk of the Brethren of the Dusk, the only one of his order not fully consumed by the Ruination.
Other pieces possessed objects, but two other pieces found their way into other living hosts The first was Isolde's own doll, left underwater for centuries. Gwen woke up on the shore of the Shadow Isles, possessed by a life she could not understand. Gwen found her maker's tools, enlarged like she was, and with them fended off a group of wraiths drawn to the spark of life that clung to the former doll. She remembered little, but what she could recall was that her maker had fallen victim to the obsession of a man - of Viego.
Discovering that Isolde's joy still lived on within her, Gwen decided to learn as much about the Ruination as possible, and stop Viego from making more victims.
The second was a young girl on an island far away. Senna discovered a shipwreck on the coast, but while exploring it, the fragment of Isolde entered her, warning her of the tendril of Black Mist that searched for her life.
Isolde watched Senna grow from a frightened girl to a deadly Sentinel of Light, and was pulled with her into Thresh's lantern when Senna died to the Chain Warden.
Within, Senna learned that the overflow of life she had was why the Mist continually hunted for her. After Senna escaped, only to be attacked again by Thresh, Isolde was finally able to reveal herself. They pulled free of Thresh's power with a new goal: Find the Ruined King, and stop him at any cost.
Not long afterwards, however, a series of Harrowings larger than any before shook Runeterra to its core. Viego had finally awoken and was searching for his queen. During a massive Harrowing stretching across Valoran and Ionia, Viego managed to rip out the fragment of Isolde within Senna.
The Sentinel and her husband Lucian narrowly escaped, but they could not keep running. Somehow, a small piece of Isolde had managed to cling on, making it impossible for Viego to resurrect his queen. After meeting a rookie Sentinel and Gwen, they began assembling a team of Sentinels to take the fight to Viego.
Yet more and more of Isolde was ripped away, from various regions within a short period of time. The last fragments of Isolde were brought together. This time, though, when she returned to life, Isolde felt no anger, no hurt.
