Abandon them without an alternative is worse. I doubted that any one could compare students from different schools fairly purely based on their high school records. Without a standard test, what will be the standard? What a disaster SATs are required to understand where a student stands from a quantitative standpoint since many high schools' grading expectations differ. My daughter was declined by all UCs. She is a 4. She did it all She did it all…sports 4 years, robotics 4 years, leadership on campus, mentoring at local elementary, photography 4 years with published work and yearbook, hundreds of hours of community service and a part-time job cut short by pandemic.
She is also part of a highly respected STEM program and applied to engineering majors. Not a single offer. Essays were excellent — approved by her English teacher and counselor. She received interviews with Ivys, waitlisted at 2 top 10s publics and a handful of highly respected private schools.
Accepted to 2 great options unfortunately, both across the country, and 5x more expensive than instate UCs , but not a single UC. The SATs would have shown her extra ability as she was scoring in the range on practice tests. Would a vs 12, 13 and 14s have made a difference? Why, because inflated GPA, ethnicity, location of school? I have coached these kids, spend hundreds of hours with them. It is shocking, disappointing and now, life-changing for my daughter.

Got accepted with only a 2. It used to be a dummy school before when southern California was less-populated back then. This is because acceptance rate was going up for 4 unusual school years in , due to lack of demand for this UCR campus at that time. I do know that engineering and CS was insanely competitive at the tier 1 and even tier 2 UCs. Same experience here with my son.
