Why does widescreen exist

The argument for WS would of course be that it was originally presented in WS, so you keep the theatrical version. Oh, and I definitely forget about the WS bars very quickly. Oh, another comment though, when they were running the letterbox B5 on Sci-Fi channel the first time, at least one, if not two seasons, they actually DID just put black boxes over the original versions.

They fixed that for the second run through, but it really sucked for the first time through. It might. If the film was shot in Super35 with the intention of the video version being full frame, you'd probably be ok with the fullscreen version. Not many films are shot this way, though. It's very common to use a larger format to shoot with, especially for effects shots, but it's rare that the cinematographers intend for you to see the whole thing in those cases.

The other problem is that you don't really have any way of knowing when a film was shot in a larger format with intention of going to video. Because otherwise people get confused about where the sand people are. It's more than an aesthetic choice.

What am I missing? Now when I encode to MP3 I do somewhere between to kb at 44 khz. For me this comes close enough to CD qualty that can't hear any diffence. Now by any chance are you still listening to LP's? People have agure that they sound much better then CD's Bill Meadows Now you're just being stupid. There are audible differences between Mbps mp3s and CD quality audio. If you can't hear it that's fine and you can be happy with your mp3.

My video store only orders Full Screen versions of some movies. I wish they did not exist. The exist moreso because people are uneducated than they do because of preference. Stop referring to them as "widescreen" and " full screen" and start calling them "full image" and "narrowscreen".

If they sell everyone the narrowscreen version, then when everyone buys a widescreen TV they'll have to go back and buy all their movies again , because people are f'n idiots. I've been considering making a test DVD that demos the various aspect ratios, with comparisons between the narrowscreen image and the original source. I figure I might be able to whip something up with avisynth, but it'll require me to actually HAVE some narrowscreen movies.

I figure what you could do is fade the wider image slightly so that the 'full' frame image is highlighted, so that people could WATCH the difference. I'll have to play around after xmas I've got an uncle who's a freak about this shit, his attitude is that he doesn't want to waste television space, since he paid for a huge screen.

Holy Crap, Savetele still has a site up? I emailed him years back citing explicit examples of what the advantages of widescreen was. I know he was a troller but I had to try. His response? Sigh, I simply wish his site would die, as it is a troll, and those that don't know better will still believe it.

Now what's with this name calling? With to kb you have good SQ with reasonable file sizes which is why most MP3 off P2P programs are in this range. Now most people get real anoryed by widescreen movies on regular TVs. And personally I think widescreen DVDs are just a way to get people to buy expensive widescreen TVs that they would otherwise buy.

Not name calling: You're being stupid. His site claims that they are superimposing the black bars over the movie and "censoring" it as such. Why do people feel the need to outright LIE? He's either a retarded chimp or I don't know. Either way, people like him should be dragged into the street and shot. This applies to anyone who makes a website spreading lies without some sort of evidence that it is a joke.

Is the DVD version the modified or is it the original widescreen version? The back of the Season 1 box says: 'Widescreen Version presented in a "matted" widescreen format preserving a theatrical exhibition aspect ratio.

Enhanced for widescreen tvs. Only if it was composed for showing that way. Anyone who needs to be convinced that widescreen is better need only rent the fullscreen pan 'n scan version of Lawrence of Arabia to see how the fullscreen treatment completely fucks up the well scene with Sharif and O'Toole. I was just trying to provide a little extra context, which I feel is pertinent as there are some people who think that widescreen is be all and end all of presentation and deride material irrespective of that being its original aspect ratio AOR.

For me it's all about seeing it as it was intended to be seen. As a general response it always amuses me when people talk about "black bars". Why on earth would you film King Kong in wide-screen? All of that is explain it away nonsense. That was the number one reason film went to wider formats in the first place to differentiate it from television lest cinema be destroyed. People can watch widescreen at home.

Why BOTHER to go to the movie theater anymore with mega-high prices on both tickets and snacks, people kicking your seat and the occasional lunatic that starts shooting in a crowded theater? With my It looks just as ridiculous as it does at home now. How many movie theaters have balconies nowadays with the advent of stadium seating? What is old is new again. Screw Until I grow a single cyclops eye, 2. If I want to watch M.

Otherwise, good riddance. Just like Anamorphic. I do not fully agree with this point of view. I see a lot of people throwing a vintage look on their pictures and videos with no justification to it. I think all vintage looks should be reserved for films that tell vintage stories… If you making a film about the modern world, it would be weird to throw a vintage ratio.

At the same time, I can see it being used for stories about the past century. But here comes the question — Chicken or Egg? Unless you making a film specifically for a movie theater, you have to consider all kinds of media devices people may watch this film on. And the fact is our modern screens are getting wider and wider. Netflix is most likely to be viewed on wide screen TV.

Youtube is often widescreen PC or even wider phone screen. Will look that great with black bars on both side of TV and phone? There is plenty of ways to have a good framing on pretty much any aspect ratio. Even for the face. So, really, the face will look about the same way in both frames. Widescreen was created for a reason — it was an attempt to emulate human eye experience.

Our vision is panoramic. Achieving this effect at home was not possible for a large market so it was reserved for film theaters. A film, in its basics, is an attempt to dip viewers int alternative reality, as close to a real experience as possible. A panoramic view is part of it.

Today we are finally able to get this kind of view at home and even in our hands — should stop for a moment and appreciate it. Social Media format is going towards vertical and square frames. Its great for portrait shots, which is very popular with talking heads on social media. Snapchat even makes short series in vertical format. Square is perfect because you are not losing any space with it. I am sure the best example of using different aspect ratios would be Grand Budapest Hotel which uses aspect ratio based on the context of the story.

Another way of using would be when dealing with old media. I can see the documentary being shot in this format because it uses many materials shot in that format. After all, I am very skeptical about going with weird aspect ratios. Many people are using them in order to be distinctive, while their story sucks… Media Devices should be considered when making decisions on film aspect ratio. Is it vertical Snapchat?

Is it TV? You have this large canvas at home, that happened to be Why not fill it with the image completely? It was promoted by production head Darryl Zanuck, and it is actually worse for movies about people! My choice for video is , and with the proper lens and composition. With height the tops of actors heads are seldom sliced off, and scenes do not look as if viewed through a raised venetian blind slat. I have some technical questions, have you seen Mid90s the movie, How do you thing this was shot?

What kind of camera? Hey Ricardo! I loved that movie. It was probably shot on an Arri Many cameras can shoot in ! On other cameras, you can just crop the image in post.

For me as a viewer or 1. OK I have!! When will people realise that shooting in landscape mode gives you the best of both worlds and will look better when viewed buy historians in years to come. For sure! This was a great read. The beauty of this coming back is that the viewer will once again enjoy movies of all colors and aspect ratios a like.

Whatever an artist wants to do, they should do. But if an artist cares at all about making a little extra money, they should consider filming in at least width. They can always crop to the smaller size for the artsy-craftsy crowd. There may be nothing of much significance on the sides, but it looks better on modern wide screen TVs than black bars. At least for the average consumer. The only time it might not hurt sales is for a truly vintage look in black and white.

The Steven Spielbergs of the world may not overly concern themselves with money, but novice filmmakers need whatever they can get! Hey Kevin! If anything, I think we are now working at a time when aspect ratios are more flexible than ever. You could theoretically get into a film festival even with an iPhone video shot in portrait mode, so is certainly not going to be an issue.

Best of luck! A 2K scan, we intended to finish at 1. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Hi Bradley — great question. I would create a 1. Hope this helps! I agree! That is the most beautiful film aspect ratio of all! Many German movies in the mid 70s and later e. It is a very photographic format, where everything balances beautifully, especially landscapes involving trees or mountains.

I like that vintage format too. I was actually doing some research on how to shoot in and 2k regarding cameras. I found out that the Arri Alexa mini has an option for Hi Sofia! You could technically frame for on any camera even and then just crop the image with a pillar box in post. That said, when people use anamorphic lenses on sensors, they end up with a 2.

Thanks for writing such thoughtful articles Noam, one of the only film blogs I actually pay attention to! May I add another reason? Not so much the film presentation itself, but social media short films and marketing require a square aspect ratio or even portrait to work well on a Facebook timeline or Twitter feed. Great article. We just wrapped our first feature film and the director and d. The producer fought against it but the director ultimately won out.

Hi Ingerson, just wondering which camera did you use to shoot ? Or did you just crop the image on post? When it comes to a format, interestingly enough The Contempt that was shot large format, features dozens of shots where characters are put into a format within the a frame within the frame , and it always happens when something happen on the human intimate level. I see that you also mentioned social media influencing aspect ratios.

What are your thoughts on shooting a film in with the intention that it would most likely be seen on a cell phone? Like, for example, the increasing regularity of people using their phones to watch Netflix or scrolling through Instagram. If it were hosted on YouTube or Vimeo, a standard ratio would work too, since most phone screens are approximately Why not go all the way: shoot it in black and white and in mono.

But doing a 1. Imagine how incredible that 2. The only reason the old Academy ratio of 1. Before pretty much every movie was that ratio so the television sets were the same. Funny, you have this strange push for all televisions going to a ratio. Haha — Thanks for this, John. Many shows are now shot in unusual aspects. Take Homecoming on Amazon for example!
